Meet Muhamad Reda Galih Pangestu, a master's student in the Chemical Engineering Department at our esteemed College of Chemicals and Materials-KFUPM, part of the prestigious King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals - KFUPM. 𝙏𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙘: Design Development of Integrated Methane Pyrolysis and Reforming Processes for Low-Carbon Urea Production 𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨: Traditional methods of industrial ammonia-urea production heavily rely on steam methane reforming (SMR) processes, which are known for their high energy intensity and significant carbon dioxide emissions. In today's era of decarbonization, industries are challenged to adapt and modify their processes towards more sustainable and low-emission production methods. Methane pyrolysis (MP) is emerging as a promising alternative, garnering attention from researchers worldwide. Unlike SMR, MP generates hydrogen with lower energy intensity and no carbon dioxide byproduct. Instead of CO2, MP produces valuable solid carbon byproducts such as carbon black, graphite, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), or carbon nanofibers (CNFs), depending on the temperature and catalyst employed. This project focuses on the design and development of an integrated MP and SMR system aimed at hydrogen production, with potential applications in ammonia and urea synthesis. Utilizing Aspen Plus software, the design model will be simulated and evaluated, validated with experimental and plant design data from relevant literature. Furthermore, a techno-economic analysis will provide a comprehensive overview of the project's economic viability, particularly in anticipation of future scenarios involving widespread CO2 taxation or carbon trading. Muhamad Reda is excited to present this project at the upcoming Middle East Process Engineering Conference and Exhibition (MEPEC) on May 6-8, 2024, at Dhahran Expo, KSA.
